How to get the Ursine Gear Set in The Witcher 3 (Bear School) (2024)

This guide will show you how to start the Bear School Gear Quest, where to find and obtain all the diagrams and the requirements to craft the armor and weapons from the basic tier Ursine witcher set in the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.

The Bear School or Ursine gear is a simple but powerful heavy armor set. It grants a boost in attack power, crit hit chance, dismemberment, adrenaline, slashing resistance, elemental resistance, and more.

How to start the Bear School Scavenging Hunt Quest

There is no need to go out of your way to find the map fragment that will start the quest for you. When you find the diagrams, this quest will be completed for you automatically. If you want to get the map fragment, visit the Armorer in Kaer Trolde, the main Skellige island.

The NPC offers four map fragments and two Witcher’s notes. Purchase them to begin the Scavenging Hunt quests to obtain the Bear School basic gear. This crafter is also mentioned in our guide to the Merchants in the Witcher 3 you have to visit!

The basic Ursine set requires level 20 to wear it with the exception of the Crossbow that you can only use after you hit level 29. I’d recommend that you start this quest when you’re around level 21-24 so you struggle as little as possible. Of course, nothing stops you from starting this mission at lower levels but I wouldn’t recommend it.

The Bear School witcher gear is simple, but very stylish. And later, when upgraded, it turns into one of the best-looking armor sets.

Where to find the Diagrams

There are seven diagrams of the Bear School gear. All of them are in the Skellige Islands. The order in which you get the diagrams doesn’t matter.

Ursine Steel Sword Diagram Location

Travel to Kaer Muire, the biggest of the Skellige Islands. Go to the Southeast, there’s a Ruined Inn. You’ll know that you’ve arrived because of the level 14 Sirens that are flying over the area.

There are three structures, find the one that’s damaged the most. There are two level 20 Wraiths down the stairs. Be careful.

Once you defeated the Wraiths, go to the room that’s farthest from the stars. Here’s where you’re going to find the Steel Sword diagram.

Ursine Silver Sword Diagram Location

Travel to the North of Ard Skellig, you can use the Ancient Crypt as a reference point. If you haven’t discovered it, use the two boat icons instead.

Be careful when you get to this area. There are two level 13 Gargoyles and a level 30 Ice Elemental in the same location. All of them are weak to Dimeritium Bombs and Elementa Oil.

There is a guarded treasure icon in this location, this is not where the diagram is located. Stand in front of these ruins and walk to the right entrance.

Inside you’ll find a skeleton, loot it to acquire the Silver Sword Diagram.

Ursine Boots, Armor, Trousers, and Gauntlets Diagram Location

Go to Urialla Harbor, it’s the island that is at the top right corner of the map (An Skellig). Once you’re there, travel to the north. Follow the path, it’s easier to find the entrance when you do this. There are Level 13 Sirens flying near the area.

There’s a section of the path that’s destroyed. Get to the other side and turn left on the door that’s just a few steps away.

There’s a door downstairs, that’s where you’re heading. Watch out when walking, if you don’t pay attention you’ll fall hundreds of meters.

After you walk through the door, you’ll see a closed gate. The chest is on the other side but you have to find an alternative route. Turn left and continue walking through the tunnel.

Meters ahead, there’s a big corridor. Get to the other side and turn right, activate this lever to open the gates. There’s one level 7 Wraith waiting for you near the lever.

As soon as you open the gates, four more Wraiths will come out (also level 7), one from each cell.

After you defeated them, search for the cell that has a destroyed floor.

Climb down and continue until you find the stairs. There are a few rooms but only one way to get out so you won’t get lost. There are more Wraiths down here, this time they are level 20.

Follow the stairs, and after you cross the door walk in a straight line. The chest containing the diagrams is on your left. To get out pull the lever that is next to the gate, this will make appear more Level 20 Wraiths.

Ursine Crossbow

This is the easiest diagram to get. Go to the island in the top left corner (Spikeroog). Call roach and ride south, follow the path and you’ll have zero problems.

The path leads straight into this cave, inside it, there are Level 15 Drowners. Stick to the right, and climb the ledges that you see.

Run and jump to the other side. You’ll see a skeleton near some stalagmites.

Loot the skeleton to acquire the Crossbow diagram.

How to Craft the Armor and Weapons

This is the lowest Tier of the Bear School Gear, you don’t need any rare or special things to craft it. Visit any Journeyman Blacksmith to craft the swords and a Journeyman Armorer to get the armor set.

Crafting Materials Requirements

You need a Journeyman Armorer for the armor pieces and Journeyman Blacksmith for the swords. The materials to craft the armor pieces and both swords are easy to acquire. Excluding the materials that you get from killing monsters, you can purchase them all from the merchants that you visit to craft the gear. Remember that you can also dismantle things to get materials.

The two most interesting (and maybe rarest to obtain) crafting materials are Dark Iron Ore and Dark Steel Plate.

Dark Iron Ore
Can be looted, purchased or crafted. You can dismantle Dark Iron Ingots and some gear pieces.

Dark Steel Plate
Can be purchased from Armorers and other craftsmen and merchants. You can also craft it yourself from Dark Steel Ingots.

Where to find an Armorer and Blacksmith

It doesn’t matter which NPCs you visit to craft the items, but if you are not sure, I will mention two easily accessible and already available to you from your previous journeys on The Continent.

The Journeyman Blacksmith in Novigrad can make both swords for you. He is on the northern side of the open market area. This is just west and south of Hierarch Square.

If the NPC is not there, meditate for a bit. This one works on a regular daily shift and if you visit at night, the shop will be closed.

You can visit Crow’s Perch or Kaer Trolde to find an Armorer for the other four pieces of the set. Here is the location of Fergus Graem and Yoana.

Bear School Gear Set Stats

The bear school set boosts your attack power and adrenaline point gain. Don’t throw away or destroy the crafted items. You will need them to craft the Enhanced Ursine gear later.

How to get the Legendary Version of the Ursine set

The Bear School or Ursine Witcher Gear set is available in New Game Plus (NG+) in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. The Scavenging Quest and all diagrams are located in the exact same places as in the normal game.

In NG+ this set is called Legendary Ursine witcher set. The word “legendary” is added to acknowledge that you are acquiring the NG+ version of the set. It has the same type of stats but offers higher values across the board. It also requires the same types of crafting materials.

The Bear School in The Witcher’s Lore

The School of the Bear was founded by the first group of witchers that parted ways with the Order of Witchers. Unlike the School of the Wolf, they had no close bonds with each other.

One time, the School failed a contract to destroy some vampires, and the people got so angry that they gathered and attack the school. Having no feelings of brotherhood or true loyalty, the Bear Witchers abandoned the school instead of defending it against the furious humans. Since then, the school has remained abandoned.
