FAQs

Do you grill a grilled cheese sandwich on high or low heat? ›

A skillet preheated to medium or medium-low is optimal (adjust yours accordingly). Start by placing one slice of buttered bread face down in the pan, top with shredded cheese. Add the second slice buttered side up. Cook 2-4 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

How many slices of cheese do you need for grilled cheese? ›

For each grilled cheese, you'll need two slices of bread, at least 1 tablespoon of butter, and 2-4 slices of cheese (depending how gooey you like it). American, Cheddar, Swiss, muenster or Gouda all work well—feel free to mix and match your cheeses.

Should you use butter or mayo for grilled cheese? ›

Butter goes in the pan not on the bread. To ensure golden (not burned) toastiness, the exterior of the sandwich should be slicked with mayonnaise, which has a higher smoke point and possesses the combined browning power of oil and egg yolks.

What cheese combination makes the best grilled cheese? ›

Sharp cheddar, Gouda, Fontina, Monterey Jack, Gruyere, Pepper Jack, and brie are all good options. The amount of cheese you use will depend on the size of your bread. You can do a mix of cheeses. I love sharp Cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Gouda together.

What can I add to grilled cheese to make it better? ›

The salt, fat, and crunch of bacon make it the perfect addition to the gooey and rich inside of a perfectly melted grilled cheese. Crispy, salty pork is especially delicious alongside classic grilled cheese ingredients like white bread and cheddar or American cheese.

When should you flip a grilled cheese? ›

Once the bread slightly bronzes, flip the sandwich and grate another layer of cheese on top. Let this side fully brown, 3-4 minutes. Flip once more to develop a quick, crispy parmesan crust, around 1 minute. Transport sandwich to a plate, cut, and enjoy.

How many times do you flip a grilled cheese? ›

Cook until crisp and deep golden brown, 5 to 10 minutes per side, flipping sandwiches back to first side to re-heat and crisp, about 15 seconds. Serve.

How do you perk up a grilled cheese sandwich? ›

5 Ways to Spice It Up

Using your spice rack can add flavor without extra sodium: Mix dried oregano and garlic powder in your butter before you smear it on the outside of the bread, sprinkle chili flakes on the inside of your sandwich for some spice, or simply layer in some freshly torn herbs.

Do you toast both sides of bread for grilled cheese? ›

Toasting two sides of your chosen bread can help deliver perfectly melted cheese and a satisfyingly heated interior. To make sure your grilled cheese remains delicately browned and not burned, King Arthur Baking recommends using a clear lid to keep watch over your creation.

How does Gordon Ramsay make grilled cheese? ›

Using a cast iron-pan, add a touch of olive oil and get pan hot over medium-high heat and add sandwich. After about 30-45 second push sandwich so it crisps and cheese melts. Flip after about 2 minutes, once slices are nice and crunchy. Keep flipping and pushing down until cheese is melted.

What is the most common condiment for grilled cheese? ›

Mustard is the bold condiment you need to make your grilled cheese pop and a must-have for Ina Garten's grilled cheese. To make her recipe, she whips up a spread with Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, and parmesan and adds it to the sandwich.

What can I use if I don't have butter for a grilled cheese? ›

Mayonnaise. Probably the most popular substitute for butter on a grilled cheese sandwich is mayonnaise. This is actually one of my preferred substitutes, and even what I reach for more often over butter. The mayonnaise version is a delicious option and produces a crisp crust and a wonderful, slightly tangy flavor.

Should I toast my bread before making grilled cheese? ›

For the best results, toast your bread first. A quick toast will help your bread develop the golden edges and luscious crisp that you're after. It'll also help prevent the bread from getting soggy, no matter how many fillings you add.
