The Midshipmen have outscored their opponents, 186-23, notching three games with 50 or more points.
PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Navy sprint football team (4-0, 2-0 CSFL South) defeated Alderson Broaddus (0-4, 0-2 CSFL South) on Saturday afternoon, 65-10, at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium in Philippi, W.Va. The Midshipmen have outscored their opponents, 186-23, notching three games with 50 or more points.
"I am really proud of how the team responded today," Major Alfonso Meidus, USMC. "We had an effective week of practice and we saw that correlate to success today on the field. We were able to sustain and finish drives and put points on the board. We will focus on getting healthy during our upcoming bye week."
Offensively, Navy tallied eight touchdowns and three field goals to tally a season-high 65 points in the game. Running backs Matthew McGee (Port Charlotte, Fla.) and Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) led the team with two touchdowns apiece, while Tyler Massena (Snohomish, Wash.) also rushed for a score. Jack Masterson (Reno, Nev.) and Trent Parker (Washington, D.C.) added receiving TDs with William Leong (Irvine, Calif.) and Luke Wagner (Edmond, Okla.). Navy's final score came from Dante Carrasco (Germantown, Tenn.) who returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score.
Totta finished the game with a team-high 101 rushing yards, while McGee added 75 yards on the ground. Leong was 20-for-26 for 268 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Wagner finished 4-for-5 with a touchdown pass and an interception. Andrew Margiotta (Vienna, Va.) led the team with 139 receiving yards on the day.
Defensively, the Midshipmen held the Battlers to 208 total yards, including -15 yards rushing. It is the second consecutive game that the Navy defense has held an opponent to negative yards rushing, holding Army to -10 yards on the ground in the annual Star game. As a team, Navy finished with 11 tackles for loss, including 3.0 sacks. Individually, Major Kent (Dallas, Texas) led the way with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) added eight stops, including a team-high 2.5 for loss. Jack Costigan (Middletown, N.J.), Camren Ross (Whitefish, Mont.), and Jack Thomas (Darnestown, Md.) each tallied 1.0 sacks in the game.
Mychal Golden (Jonesboro, Ark.) was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, while adding eight PATs for 17 points. Golden was true from 45, 35, and 39 during the game.
Navy was the first team to score as Golden capped an eight-play, 52-yards drive with a 45-yard field goal to put the Midshipmen in front 3-0 after their opening drive. On the Mids' second drive of the game, Navy marched down the field six plays, 49 yards before Golden converted a 35-yard field goal attempt to put the Midshipmen ahead, 6-0.
In the second quarter, the Midshipmen capped a seven-play 44-yard drive on the fourth play of the quarter with a McGee three-yard plunge into the end zone. Golden's extra point was true to put Navy in front 13-0 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Alderson Broaddus cut into Navy's lead with a 26-yard field goal on the Battlers' first drive of the second quarter, which was set up by an 88-yard pass down to the Navy five yardline. The Midshipmen answered the score by the Battlers, as Carrasco returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to put the Mids in front 20-3 with 9:34 remaining in the half.
Following a missed field goal attempt by AB, the Midshipmen wasted little time putting seven points on the score board. McGee capped a four-play 80-yard drive with an 8-yard jaunt in to the end zone. The drive was highlighted by a 74-yard pass from Leong to Margiotta to set up the score.
Navy forced a punt by Alderson Broaddus. The punt was downed on the AB 43 yardline. On the first play from scrimmage, Totta broke free and found the end zone for his first touchdown of the game, extending the Midshipmen's advantage to 34-3 with 3:23 to play in the half. The Mids added a field goal from Golden as time expired in the half to go into intermission up 37-3.
In the third quarter, Totta found the end zone for the second time on the day, as the junior capped an eight-play 51-yard drive with a 17-yard scamper into the end zone to push the score to 44-3. Navy used a short field to their advantage to extend the advantage to 51-3. The Mids ended a four-play, 36-yard drive with a Leong pass to Parker for 14 yards. Wagner completed a 58-yard touchdown pass to Masterson to increase the Navy lead to 58-3 through third quarter.
In the fourth, Alderson Broaddus was able to score a touchdown to give the home team 10 points, but Navy answered with a touchdown of its own. The Midshipmen drive was capped by a 21-yard scamper into the end zone by Massena to extend the advantage back to 55 points at 65-10.
Navy returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22, as the Midshipmen welcome Cornell to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. and live stats will be available.
