A heated dispute has arisen between neighbors, with a couple feeling the impact of their neighbors' construction project. The issue? Their solar panels, once a source of green energy and income, are now blocked by scaffolding, leaving the couple in the dark, both literally and metaphorically.
Dale and Denise Geeves, residents of Kent, had installed solar panels on their Maidstone home in 2011, a move they hoped would reduce their energy costs and contribute to a greener lifestyle. However, their neighbors' recently approved loft extension has cast a shadow over their plans, literally blocking the 16 solar panels from receiving sunlight.
"We feel trampled upon and forced to live like moles in the dark," the couple expressed to KentOnline. They further stated, "We will seek compensation for our losses."
The solar panels had been a significant source of green energy, covering 50% of their energy bill. Additionally, the surplus energy was fed back into the grid, earning the couple approximately £1,800 annually.
The Geeveses had invested a total of £22,305 on the solar panels and battery, and now they fear their investment is at risk.
Prior to the planning permission, the neighbors conducted a "shadow analysis" to assess the impact of the loft conversion. Surprisingly, it concluded that the new loft would not obstruct the solar panels' access to light. However, since the scaffolding was erected last month, the couple has been losing approximately £3-4 daily due to the loss of sunlight.
Mr. Geeves explained, "The solar panels generate electricity, providing us with free electricity, although we initially paid for the panels. We were getting double the benefit by putting money back into the grid and getting paid for it. But now, with the scaffolding, we get nothing. Yesterday, we made only eight pence, whereas normally we would have made a couple of pounds."
The 76-year-old further stated that the solar batteries have charged to only 11% since the construction began, and the couple fears that no sunlight will reach the panels once the building work is complete.
The neighbors, who are extending their home, stated, "As someone who grew up in and chose to live in this local area with my young family, I am extending my house. All work is being done in accordance with full planning approval from the council and complies with necessary regulations. I hope we can both enjoy our extensions in the years to come."
This situation raises questions about the balance between individual rights and community impact. Should neighbors have the right to extend their homes without considering the potential consequences for others?
