The first time I ever tried a chicken burger was at McDonalds. It was their delicious McChicken Sandwich and made me fall head over heels in love with chicken burgers.

Being an 80’s baby you rarely got taken to McDonalds as it was always considered overpriced and unhealthy.

But like many teens, once you get old enough to earn your own money, you can spend it on whatever you like.

My son takes this literally and you will always find his school bag full of crisps and chocolate biscuits along with Ice Tea.

From the age of 12 onwards I would have a summer waitressing job. I would walk into town and before work I would often have a McDonalds.

I would go with the McChicken Sandwich and have it with fries and a delicious thick McDonalds milkshake. It was heaven and I couldn’t imagine my teenage summers without it.

Now as an adult I like it, but its just not as good as I remember it in my teens.

I also had other chicken burger addictions. I would love the chicken burger Dominic would order me from the takeaway or the ones I used to get when eating out at KFC.

If given the choice I would choose a chicken burger with a yummy filling over a hamburger every time.

That is why I thought it was about time that I put together a classic chicken burger for the air fryer that you can make whenever you have some spare chicken mince that you want to use up.

I have got a naughty confession to admit to. I had to cheat in making these delicious air fryer chicken burgers. That is because living here in Portugal, there are a lot of ingredients that are hard to source over here.

That is why I am looking forward to travelling to the UK this month so that I can make some favourite recipes with favourite ingredients.

Some things that I wish I could get here and can’t include:

  • Lamb Mince – Have to pay a huge price tag to get lamb loin minced.
  • Poultry Mince – The same applies when trying to get chicken mince or turkey mince.
  • Ham – Can’t get it raw.
  • Gammon – Cheaper to buy beef fillet.
  • Spaghetti Squash – I wish I could try this!

I could go on and on, but I am sure you get the idea. So, you’re probably wondering how on earth I could possibly be making chicken burgers from chicken mince if this is the case?

Well there are two options:

  • Mince some chicken breasts – Simple and easy and taste amazing but rather expensive.
  • Buy some readymade chicken burgers – I can get chicken burgers shaped up that have just been seasoned with salt and pepper. They are reasonably priced and made into burger shapes already.

Well I went with the second option. Then grabbed the burgers from the packaging and made them into a ball. It then looked like classic chicken mince and was perfect for using for homemade burgers. Plus, the meat was fresh and not frozen.

Of course, what I am trying to say, is that if you don’t have the ingredient available use the next best thing that is reasonably priced.

What was important to us was that we still had plain chicken mince and we could then add all our favourite seasonings, load it up with breadcrumbs and give it that AMAZING cheesy breadcrumb crust.

Which in our opinion is what makes the best ever chicken burger in the air fryer complete.

FAQs

Should you spray airfryer basket before cooking burgers? ›

It is not necessary to oil the air fryer basket before cooking burgers. Most burgers contain enough fat to prevent sticking. However, if you prefer a little extra non-stick surface, you can lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush it with a small amount of oil.

How do you keep burgers from puffing in an air fryer? ›

After shaping the patties, use 2 fingers to make an indentation in the center of each burger. Burgers tend to puff up in the center as they cook, and the indentation helps with that. Aim for the patties to be a little thinner than 1/2-inch, as they will shrink up when they cook. Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket.

What temperature should I cook my burgers in the Airfryer? ›

Air fry burgers at 375 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes until they reach an internal temperature of 155 degrees F, flipping them at the 6-minute mark.

How long do frozen chicken burgers take in the air fryer? ›

Place all four frozen chicken patties in your air fryer basket. They can be touching but not overlapping. (Note, if you have a smaller air fryer, you might need to make these in two batches). Air fry at 400 degrees F for 6 minutes.

Can I put aluminum foil in an air fryer with burgers? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Are burgers better in the skillet or air fryer? ›

If you haven't been using your air fryer to make hamburgers, you've been missing out. Air fryer burgers are incredibly juicy and tender, with all the same great flavor of skillet burgers, but with far less hassle.

Are burgers better on the stove or air fryer? ›

When you cook burgers in a pan on the stove or in the oven, they simmer in their own fat. When you air fry them, excess fat drips off through the holes in the tray. They're super crispy. According to Lee, the rapid circulation of hot air in an air fryer causes the meat to crisp up nicely.

How to cook hamburgers in an air fryer without making a mess? ›

While I prefer the natural grill marks the air fryer basket makes, for a completely mess-free experience, use air fryer liners or a disposable air fryer basket. Shape the patties into equal-sized portions so that they cook evenly at the same time.

How long do you air fry burgers at 400 degrees? ›

Place beef patties in the air fryer basket. Set temperature to 400°F (200°C) and set time for 12 minutes. Cook burgers until a digital instant-read thermometer inserted sideways into centre of each burger reads 160°F (71°C).

How to keep burgers from shrinking in an air fryer? ›

It's okay if they are barely touching just on the sides since the burgers will shrink up fairly quickly, but you want to make sure there is still space for air circulation between the burgers. Work in batches if your air fryer isn't big enough to handle four burgers at a time. Air fryer burger temp and time.

Are air fryer burgers good? ›

I have to say; the air fryer made a darn good burger.

I don't know if there's anything an air fryer can't do. I preheated it to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and cooked the patty for six minutes before flipping it over and letting it cook for two more. The cleanup was minimal since our air-fryer baskets are dishwasher-safe.

Do you have to flip frozen burgers in air fryer? ›

It takes 14 minutes to cook four 4oz frozen burgers in the air fryer at 370°F. Be sure to flip them halfway through!

Can you use parchment paper in an air fryer? ›

Yes, and here's what you need to know. Parchment paper is a safe and effective liner to use in the air fryer. To avoid safety hazards, weigh down the paper with food and keep away from the heating element. Parchment paper can be heated up to roughly 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Should you spray oil on an air fryer basket? ›

Never Use Nonstick Spray

Spraying the basket in the air fryer with nonstick spray can damage the air fryer's nonstick coating and can make the pan unsafe for use. If you need to use a cooking spray, like when cooking breaded food items like chicken tenders, only spray the food directly before turning on the air fryer.

Do you spray the pan before cooking burgers? ›

Spray your skillet with a little non-stick spray and place burgers in the skillet. Press down on each patty with a spatula for 10 seconds. This is to encourage browning. Cook the burgers over medium heat for 4 minutes.

How do you prepare an air fryer basket? ›

If you're reheating foods, you're welcome to skip the oil altogether. Lightly coat the basket of your air fryer with an oil spray to prevent sticking before placing food in the basket, then distribute food in one even layer across the bottom for an even bake.
