This irresistible recipe for Cast Iron Steak and Mushrooms might make you throw away your grill! Sautéing in a cast iron skillet will change the way you prepare and enjoy your steaks!

Cast Iron Steak and Mushrooms - Shaye Elliott (1)

  • 4 New York Strip steaks (about 2 pounds total)
  • Sea salt and pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 5 cups wild mushrooms
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • Parsley (chopped for garnish)
  1. Pat steaks dry, generously salt and pepper each side. Drizzle olive oil into a large cast iron skillet. When the oil is just starting to smoke, add steaks to sear. Cook for 4 minutes per side until crusted for medium-rare. Remove the steaks from the skillet and transfer to a warm oven to rest.
  2. In another skillet, melt the butter. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes, until fragrant. While garlic is cooking, gently break apart or roughly chop mushrooms. Add mushrooms to melted butter and garlic. Cook for 3-5 minutes, until slightly golden in color. Season the mushrooms with salt and pepper.
  3. Remove steaks from the oven, transfer to a plate and carefully spoon the cooked mushrooms on top. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.

What an exciting new journey! I have so enjoyed just watching all of the fun on this journey of life you invite us on every time you share here. This recipe is one of my favorites because of how beautifully the cast iron cooks everything. Those pans are magic and thank you for saying don’t wash the mushrooms. Great tips. can’t wait to see what you have to share!

Why would you not want to cook the mushrooms in the cast iron pan, after the steaks?

When resting the steaks, should we take it out of the skillet, so it wont keep cooking?

You’ve officially convinced me to buy a cast iron skillet. I’m the one that wants to throw out the grill but the steaks are what keep it around.

Brava, Shaye! I, too, love my cast iron skillets. I have several, one of which is a grill pan. I swear, I live out of those pans. I’m glad you’ve taken the leap into videos. You’re a terrific writer….but also a lovely young woman with a heart that shines through. Watching you “on camera” is a treat! Well done, Ma’am! (I could almost smell those steaks…AND garlic!)

I have enjoyed your blog for awhile now…found you when searching for other homesteaders and getting ideas/knowledge as we embark on our own homesteading self-sufficient lifestyle. Love the video and can’t wait for more! I do love cooking out of my cast iron as well! Adds sooooo much flavor! I wonder tho, why not wash mushrooms? I’m not a mushroom eater, but the rest of my family is and I always thought you wanted to scrub all the dirt and stuff off of them??

Danae, I think you want to just brush off as much dirt as you can and not actually wet the mushrooms because they’ll soak up water and then steam in your pan instead of caramelize. I’ve seen other chefs barely dampen a kitchen towel and just rub off the dirt, not rinse or submerge them.

Shaye, I love your blog–seeing what you’re doing with your home and young family inspires me to do the same in my own home. Unfortunately we were not blessed with children, but have a happy space nonetheless. While I do have a garden, I don’t use it to it’s fullest potential–we actually have a big enough back yard that I could grow everything we need (including some trees); raise some layers and maybe even 4-6 meat birds or some rabbits; and some pretty flowers to boot. I could have a mini farm here in the city! PLEASE keep writing wonderful things on your blog–and GREAT STEAK VIDEO!!!

And congratulations on the new baby!

We went to the farmers market on Saturday and got mushrooms just to make this recipe! Then tonight we just made it and had it for dinner. OH MY STARS. The whole family just loved it and ate it all up. So easy and so delicious. I plan to make it again. Thank you so much! The videos definitely help- I learned so much like how to rest the meat and to not wash the shrooms!

All of our pots and pans are cast iron in this house except for one for those certain recipes. I seriously think meat tastes so much better when cooked on cast iron!
