These delicious campfire cheesesteaks will satisfy and delight your entire family!
As you know, we just returned from a weekend of family camping bliss. I wanted to share with you the absolute best meal of the weekend: Campfire Cheesesteaks. We had people walking by and drooling I cooked these babies up.
Cheesesteaks are simple to make and one of our family’s favorite meals. While looking for more easy and delicious camping meals I decided to adapt a few of our favorite meals for camping.
Jump to Recipe
Cooking the onions and peppers over the campfire filled our campsite with a mouth-watering aroma that was drawing nearby campers to our site just to see what we were cooking.
These are easy to assemble on site! You could also precook the peppers and onions, but I loved the experience of doing it over the campfire.
Campfire cheesesteak perfection!

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Servings 4
Ingredients
- 1 pound sliced roast beef
- 2 onions
- 4 green peppers
- 1 loaf garlic bread
- 6 slices pepper jack cheese
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Slice onion and green peppers. (I do this at home before our camping trip and store in a ziplock bag.
Heat oil in a skillet over the fire.
Once oil is hot, add in onions and cook for 5 minutes or until they begin to brown.
Add the peppers to the onions and continue to cook until they are soft and tender.
Place open garlic bread on aluminum foil and layer with roast beef.
Once onions and peppers are cooked, add on top of roast beef.
Add all six slices of cheese on top of onions and peppers.
Put the top slice of garlic bread on sandwich and cover in two layers of foil.
Place over the fire, or near coals, and cook for approximately 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
Slice into four pieces and eat hot!
My kids ate every single bite of this and were asking for more. You can bet this year I’ll be doubling this recipe.
What is your favorite camping meal?

They are! Cheese steaks are a favorite here anyway, and I was thrilled to be able to adapt it to camping.

Looks great. I am home this summer due to a newly diagnosed cancer. Your post has me looking forward to small things I can do. Thanks.

How many servings (or sandwiches) is this? I’m potentially feeding 8 so I want to make sure I get enough ingredients (especially the roast beef).

The recipe has one loaf of garlic bread and 8 oz of beef. I would definitely double that for 8!

When I make these at home, I start with a roast in the crockpot (low for 5-6 hours). I saute the peppers and onions, then mix with the cooked beef. I scoop the meat onto buns, add the cheese, and broil to melt. Super simple, super delicious.
